The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is Australia’s independent public broadcaster, established by the Federal Government in 1932. Today the Corporation provides content via digital, television and radio platforms, reaching 62% of Australians each week.  With over 4,500 employees from diverse backgrounds across over 70 locations around Australia and overseas, the ABC’s vision is to be “an essential part of daily life for all Australians”.  Its purpose is to deliver valued services that reflect and contribute to Australian society, culture and identity and to fulfil its functions as set out in the ABC Act, particularly the ABC Charter which sets out its functions. 

THE ROLE

The ABC Board of Directors is seeking to appoint a Managing Director to drive future priorities and provide inspirational leadership on its purpose, culture and the fulfilment of its Charter.

At the core of success for the next Managing Director will be the ability to capture the aspirations of the Australian public, whilst positioning the organisation for the future through modernising and implementing an audience focussed enterprise.

The role of Managing Director also encompasses the function of “Editor-in-Chief” and holds ultimate editorial authority and responsibility for all content published by the Corporation.

THE QUALIFICATIONS

  • An outstanding contemporary leader with an understanding of and belief in the ABC as a public broadcaster, bringing a strong cultural awareness of Australian society and Australian issues.
  • A proven strategic thinker, who has successfully delivered enterprise-wide transformation across culture, operations, and digital capability.
  • A financially astute CEO with experience reporting to a Board of a complex organisation and collaborating with multiple and diverse stakeholders, including government.
  • Communication skills, confidence, and resilience to operate in a high profile, public role and able to engage effectively with a diverse array of thought leaders and stakeholders.
  • Well-informed on the Australian and global economic, social, geopolitical and broad media environment.
